CPS statement on the sentencing of Arthur Hawrylewicz

Arthur Hawrylewicz, 42, was sentenced at the Inner London Crown Court today (24 April 2023) to 10 years imprisonment after he attempted to throw a woman in the path of an oncoming train at King’s Cross underground tube station.

He had previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder on 6 March 2023 at the same court.

On 29 August 2022, a drunk Hawrylewicz was at King’s Cross station when he targeted the 22-year-old woman who was on her way to Notting Hill carnival with her friends. 

He had tried to talk to the woman, before he picked her up as the train approached the platform and attempted to throw both her and himself in front of the oncoming train.

Fortunately, her friends intervened to save her from his grasp.

Carla Harris of the CPS said: “Arthur Hawrylewicz subjected an innocent woman, who was on her way to enjoy a day out with her friends at Notting Hill Carnival, to a terrifying ordeal from which she was fortunate to escape with her life.  This was a dangerous act that could have had fatal consequences if not for the quick intervention of the woman’s friends. People should be able to use public transport without fear of assault or harm and the CPS will robustly prosecute those who attempt to compromise the safety of those who use our public transport system.”
