Today (11 July 2024) at Margate Magistrates’ Court, Gheorghe Nica, 46, was ordered to serve a further eleven and half months imprisonment after failing to payback £65,157.65 which he was ordered to pay in a proceeds of crime confiscation hearing. All of the Confiscation Order monies recovered from Nica, which a Judge has determined is his available assets, will be paid by way of compensation to the families of the 39 victims.

A landlady who was jailed for keeping a vulnerable woman in domestic servitude has had to sell a property to pay the victim back almost £200,000. 

Farzana Kausar, formerly of Worthing, was jailed for six years and eight months on 21 December 2022 at Lewes Crown Court after she was found guilty of one count of holding a person in slavery or servitude and one count of perverting the course of justice. 

Today at Chelmsford Crown Court, a Confiscation Order of £22,305 was given to Stephen Bear, to retrieve the ill-gotten gains he accumulated from publishing explicit content to a subscription site without the consent of those involved. The judge has ordered that the victim, Georgia Harrison, be compensated to the value of £5,000, which will be paid out of any monies paid towards the Confiscation Order.

Bear was convicted of voyeurism and two counts of disclosing a private sexual film on 14 December 2022 and was sentenced on 3 March 2023 to 21 months’ imprisonment. 

A convicted money launderer responsible for transporting illegal money to Dubai has been ordered to pay £3,496,778 through a Confiscation Order made by the court on 19 March 2024. 

Abdulla Mohammad Ali Bin Beyat Alfalasi, 48, arranged the transport of an estimated £93-£110 million in illegally obtained cash to Dubai, by carrying (and arranging for others to carry) suitcases packed with around £500,000 of illegal cash onto business class flights.

A convicted people smuggler, responsible for the manslaughter of 39 people who died in the back of a lorry in Essex, has today (24 September 2023) been ordered to pay a total of £65,157.65 to victims’ families through a Confiscation Order made by the court today.

Gheorghe Nica, 46, is the final defendant in this series of proceeds of crime confiscation hearings with total orders of £283,802.58, all to be paid by way of compensation to the families of the 39 victims.
