In March 2021, CPS West Midlands Magistrates' Court Unit successfully prosecuted a range of hate crime cases. Below are just a handful of the cases we prosecuted.
Closer working between CPS and police helping to increase charges of rape and serious sexual offences in the West Midlands
As part of a collective effort across the criminal justice system to tackle the discrepancy between rape and sexual offence cases being reported and taken to court, senior police officers and legal managers across the country are now working closer and communicating more regularly. In the West Midlands, this has contributed to a 33% rise in charges for rape and serious sexual offences.
CPS West Midlands: Hate crime cases prosecuted in May and June 2020
During May and June, CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ Court unit successfully prosecuted 124 hate crime cases. Among those targeted by the defendants were police officers, a bus driver, a taxi driver and a paramedic. Below are just a handful of the cases we prosecuted.

Our lawyers successfully prosecuted hate crime cases in the West Midlands in March and April 2020. Among those targeted by the defendants were police officers, security guards, a 15-year-old schoolboy, and a mother and her six-year-old child. Below are just a handful of the cases we prosecuted.
CPS West Midlands: Successful COVID-19 prosecutions – March to May 2020
CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ Court unit successfully prosecuted 78 COVID-19-related cases over the past three months including incidents of emergency workers and key workers being assaulted, threatened, coughed at and spat on by people claiming to have COVID-19.
Corrected press release: Community order for man who secured unauthorised access to a hospital’s computer data
On 16 January 2020, a press release was issued following the conviction and sentence of Daniel Mooney before the Stoke-on-Trent Court on the same day. The release was inaccurate in part and we apologise for that error.
