Consultation on CPS’ Draft Statutory Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Objectives 2019 – 2022
The broad purpose of the equality duty is to integrate consideration of equality and good relations into the day-to-day business of public authorities.
The Equality Act 2010 requires all public bodies, including the CPS, to publish equalities objectives at least every four years. The aims of the objectives are to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in the CPS.
The delivery of equality and diversity outcomes is integral to everything we do and shapes our approach to the treatment of defendants, victims and witnesses. It is at the heart of attracting, retaining and developing a high-calibre, valued workforce that reflects modern Britain.
The CPS conducted a public consultation on its updated statutory Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Objectives 2019-2022.

Consultation content
Our equality, diversity and inclusion objectives are aligned to our corporate objectives and equality, diversity and inclusion strategy. They set out what the CPS will do to:
- continue to meet the general and specific duties as set out in the Public Sector Equality Duty;
- make measurable progress on equality and diversity; and
- how we will go about doing this in partnership with a number of stakeholders.
The consultation sought views on the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Objectives:
- Are the outcomes we are seeking to achieve the right ones?
- Will the proposed key activities for year one contribute to the delivery of these outcomes?
- Are there any other outcomes you would like to see that haven’t been included?
- Do the proposed outcomes help us to have regard for the three aims of the general duty which are:
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
- There was also an opportunity for respondents to add any other general comments they may have had about the proposed outcomes and activities.
