Request
In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (2000), I am requesting that you please provide figures available on Hate Crime within each London Borough for the calendar (January - December) years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 regarding:
The number of successful prosecutions for recorded hate crime offences within each individual borough.
Please may you also categorise these figures into the following subsections, where the information is present:
- Nationality/Xenophobic Hate Crime
- LGBT+ Hate Crime
- Racial Hate Crime
- Religious Hate Crime
Response
The CPS can confirm that we hold information. We have interpreted your request for “successful outcomes” as “convictions”. The definitions are available in the attached Excel spreadsheet on the first tab.
We hold data for convictions for Homophobic flagged, Transphobic flagged, Racially Aggravated flagged and Religiously Aggravated flagged hate crimes broken down by London Borough. The CPS does not collect data under the classification of nationality/xenophobic hate crime.
I attach an Excel spreadsheet setting out a summary of the volume of defendants finalised with a conviction for the relevant hate crime flags for the London Boroughs for the requested years. If there is no record for a Borough then it should be counted as zero. Please note the definitions and data caveats in the first tab of the Excel file. Data for 2023 is recorded for January to June in accordance with our publication policy.
The Metropolitan Police Force publishes Hate Crime data down to London Borough level in the ‘End of Year Other Crime Types’ section of the Annual crime summaries located on their website.
It is important to note that the counting unit used by the police in these summaries is the number of offences. It therefore should not be used for comparison with the CPS data provided here, which counts defendants at the point of completed prosecution. In addition, because of the way crime statistics are currently released by the Home Office they will include incidents that are not referred to the CPS.
