Performance management and case outcomes
These pages provide information on how well the CPS has performed across a range of key areas of responsibility. You will also find information on the outcomes of criminal cases nationally and locally, across a range of crime types.
CPS Quarterly Data Summaries
From January 2020, the CPS has published quarterly bulletins of data tables and summaries of main trends as part of the CPS’s ongoing commitment to transparency on prosecution performance. The bulletins contain performance information relating to overall prosecution figures and police referrals as well as charging rates in a range of offence types including domestic abuse, rape flagged offences, hate crime and child sexual abuse.
This data is operational management information to be used as indicators of CPS’ performance. Official statistics relating to crime and policing are maintained by the Home Office and Office for National Statistics. Official statistics relating to criminal courts including caseload, timeliness, convictions and sentencing outcomes are maintained by the Ministry of Justice.
CPS decision-making and defendant characteristics
Data based on CPS management information for defendants, including age, gender and ethnic background.
NB - We republished and rearranged these data in June 2019 to appear quarterly and by financial year. Previously, they were published quarterly and listed by month and calendar year.
They can now be found in the Quarterly Data Summaries. Earlier data on CPS case outcomes by principal offence can be found in archived versions of the CPS website, available from the UK Government Web Archive, or from data.gov.uk.
Assisted Suicide
We publish regularly updated figures on cases where assisted suicide is considered as a possible factor in someone's death.
Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 agreements
Letters from the DPP to the Attorney General outlining the number of agreements made under sections 71 to 74 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005. Written and published annually.
Joint Enterprise Data
This information focuses on cases involving multiple defendants in the 'Homicide' category recorded by the CPS.
Victims' Right to Review data
The Victims' Right to Review (VRR) Scheme was first launched in June 2013. These data cover the number of cases reviewed under the Scheme in each financial year. They reflect the number of cases where the initial decision made was found to be the right ones and those where it was not. This is also put into the context of the total number of qualifying cases the CPS dealt with during the year in question.
