Information about solicitors and barristers employed by the CPS

  1. How many lawyers does the CPS directly employ?
  2. What is the breakdown between solicitors and barristers?
  3. What is the breakdown across the 14 CPS areas?
  4. Of all the lawyers the CPS employs, please provide a breakdown of age ranges, ie. 18-25, 25-40, 40-60, 60+
  5. How many pupillages and legal traineeships has the CPS offered in the past 3 financial years?
  6. What has been the total budget (£) for the CPS over the past 3 financial years?
  7. Over the past 3 financial years, how much has the CPS spent (£) on its workforce. ie as a % of total CPS expenditure how much does the CPS spend on staffing costs.
  8. Over the past 3 financial years, how much has the CPS spent (£) on instructing external legal counsel to advise and present / prosecute cases at Court? (can this also be provided as a % of total CPS expenditure, for the past 3 years)

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) does hold recorded information covering the questions you raise.

Please find attached for your reference an excel spreadsheet labelled "12738 DATA" which answer those questions accordingly Please note that tab 1 deals with questions 1 to 5 and tab 2 deals with questions 6 to 8.
