Guilty: Man who attempted to murder woman in frenzied bottle attack outside Leeds pub

A man who attacked a lone woman with a broken bottle in a random and unprovoked attack on a popular student high street has pleaded guilty to her attempted murder on what would have been the first day of his trial.

The victim was walking down Headingley High Street past the Original Oak pub in March 2024, having been for dinner at a nearby restaurant, when Albashir attacked her without warning. He continued the frenzied assault even as witnesses rushed towards him, and only stopped when members of the public physically intervened. Had bystanders not stepped in, the attack could have proved fatal.

Prosecutors built a compelling case built on the victim's own testimony, witness statements, medical evidence, and CCTV footage from buses passing through the area shortly before the attack to prove Albashir’s guilt.

They also instructed an expert medical witness who found that Albashir was fit and capable of forming the intent to murder at the time of the offence. It was concluded that his behaviour was repetitive and deliberate, and that he was aware of his actions throughout the attack.

Albashir will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on 16 June.

Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS Yorkshire & Humberside Aamir Sajad said: "This was a terrifying and entirely unprovoked attack on a young woman walking home after an evening out.

“Ibrahim Albashir deliberately targeted her and inflicted serious injuries that could easily have killed her. It is testimony to the bravery of the witnesses who intervened that she is still alive today.

"Albashir initially sought to avoid responsibility for his violent actions, but we were able to work closely with West Yorkshire Police to present clear evidence that he knew exactly what he was doing.

“I hope today's outcome brings some comfort to the victim and demonstrates the CPS will always seek to prosecute those who commit violence against women and girls.”
