Woman sentenced for murdering estranged husband

|News, Violent crime

A woman who murdered her estranged husband and then lied to emergency services saying he had taken his own life has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Amy Pugh, 34, of Stafford Road in Wolverhampton was sentenced today (5 September 2025) at Stafford Crown Court to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years and 77 days for the murder of 29-year-old Kyle Pugh.

The court heard how Pugh compressed Mr Pugh's neck during a violent incident at her then-home on Aston Drive, Newport at around 8.30pm on 22 March 2022. Kyle Pugh died the following day at Princess Royal Hospital from the injuries sustained during the attack.

During the altercation, Pugh hit Mr Pugh, who struck her back. She then grabbed him and pulled him down, leading to further violence during which she compressed his neck and caused fatal injuries.

Pugh then waited 20 minutes before calling emergency services. When paramedics arrived at 9.15pm, she was performing CPR on Mr Pugh but lied and told them he had hung himself with a belt.

A post-mortem examination confirmed Mr Pugh had suffered fatal neck compression injuries.

Amy Pugh was arrested on 1 April 2022 on suspicion of murder and charged in November 2024. She was convicted of murder in June 2025 following a trial at Stafford Crown Court.

Emily Clewer, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Amy Pugh's actions that night robbed Kyle Pugh of the rest of his life and deprived his family of their loved one.

“She will now face the consequences of her actions with a lengthy prison sentence.

“There is no sentence that can return Mr Pugh to his family, but we hope they are comforted that his killer has been brought to justice. Our thoughts remain with Mr Pugh's family during this difficult time."
