Driver jailed for Boxing Day deaths
A dangerous driver who killed a mother and daughter in a Boxing Day collision while racing at speeds of up to 84mph has been sentenced to 13 years’ and three months' imprisonment.
Mohammed Ibrahim, 25, of Old College Road, Birmingham, was sentenced today (16 July 2025) at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Linda Phillips, 72, and her daughter Amanda Riley, 49, died when Ibrahim's BMW collided head-on with their car at a junction in Kitts Green on 26 December 2023. Three other family members in the car suffered serious injuries in the collision. The family had been returning from a Boxing Day celebration when the tragedy occurred.
The court heard that Ibrahim had been racing another BMW and overtaking vehicles at dangerous speeds before the collision. CCTV footage showed he was travelling at between 80 and 84mph in a 30mph zone.
Ibrahim first struck a quad bike before hitting the central reservation and crossing into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with the Riley family's car. The impact was so severe that both vehicles caught fire, trapping the occupants inside. Members of the public helped rescue the survivors before emergency services arrived.
After the collision, Ibrahim left the scene and instead attended hospital with a leg injury where he was arrested.
Neelam Shafiq of the Crown Prosecution Service said: "Mohammed Ibrahim made a choice to get behind the wheel of his car and drive dangerously on a residential street without any consideration for others.
"His reckless actions resulted in the untimely deaths of a much-loved mother and daughter and has caused unimaginable pain for their family.
"Nothing can undo the tragedy suffered by the family of Linda Phillips and Amanda Riley and we extend our sympathies to them. We hope this sentence sends a clear message that dangerous driving will not be tolerated and that perpetrators will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law."
