CPS West Midlands: Successful Hate Crime Cases – February 2026

In February 2026, the CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ and Crown Court units successfully prosecuted various hate crime cases. Some of the cases are featured below.

A Worcestershire man has received a 10-week suspended sentence after sending antisemitic and homophobic messages to a victim and their father. Between April and November 2024, the defendant sent messages directing the victim to Instagram and TikTok accounts containing antisemitic and homophobic content. The victim's father also received antisemitic messages. Subscriber checks and analysis of the defendant's phone confirmed the messages originated from him, and he made admissions during his police interview. He pleaded guilty to two counts of racially aggravated harassment at his first hearing on 3 February 2026 at Worcester Magistrates’ Court. He was sentenced at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court on 23 February 2026 to 10 weeks' custody, suspended for 18 months, with a requirement to complete 30 days of a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement. A five-year restraining order was imposed to protect both victims.

A West Midlands woman has received an 18-month community order after racially and homophobically abusing and assaulting a pub worker and police officers in Oldbury. On 31 May 2025, the defendant was refused entry to a pub by a door worker. She pushed past and attempted to enter, before punching the victim to the jaw and pulling her hair, causing immediate pain. She also directed racist and homophobic abuse at the victim. Following her arrest, the defendant spat inside the police vehicle. On being escorted from the vehicle, she dug her nails into an officer's hand, breaking the skin. In the holding cell, she continued to verbally abuse officers, kicked out, and attempted to bite an officer while being restrained, including directing racial abuse at him, which was witnessed and captured on CCTV. She pleaded guilty to two counts of racially aggravated assault and criminal damage. On 9 February 2026, she was sentenced to an 18-month community order, uplifted from 12 months to reflect the racial aggravation, with 30 days of a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and £50 compensation for each victim.

A Birmingham man has received a custodial sentence after racially abusing and assaulting two police officers in Birmingham city centre. On  27 May 2025, the 24-year-old defendant suffered a medical episode in Birmingham city centre where officers attended alongside paramedics to assist. The defendant assaulted one of the officers by repeatedly punching him to the neck. He was then transported to hospital where he racially abused the two police officers who accompanied him. He pleaded guilty to two counts of racially aggravated intentional harassment and one count of assault by beating. On the 19 February 2026, he was sentenced to a total of 10 weeks' custody, which was uplifted to reflect the racial aggravation of the offending.
