CPS West Midlands: Successful Hate Crime Cases – December 2025

In December 2025, the CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ and Crown Court units successfully prosecuted various hate crime cases. Below are some of the cases.

A Coventry man has been jailed for 21 months after racially abusing and assaulting a delivery driver in the city. On 21 December 2024, the 27-year-old defendant was a passenger in a car that passed dangerously close to the victim, who was riding an electric bike as part of delivery driver training, forcing him to stop abruptly. The defendant then became racially abusive and made threats to assault him. When the victim tried to withdraw from the situation, the defendant approached and punched him in the face before members of the public intervened to prevent further escalation. The victim sustained fractures to his jaw, requiring surgical intervention. The defendant pleaded guilty to an offence of racially aggravated GBH. On 5 December 2025, he was sentenced at court to 21 months’ imprisonment, uplifted from 15 months to reflect the racial aggravation.

A 19-year-old man from Nottingham has been jailed for 32 months after a series of assaults, possession of weapons and criminal damage offences whilst in custody. Between 3 March 2024 and 7 July 2024, the defendant committed multiple assaults against prison staff. Two of these assaults involved the use of an improvised weapon, with several incidents included biting and spitting at the victims. During one of the assaults, he used racially abusive language.
The defendant pleaded guilty to all 15 offences and on 8 December 2025, he was sentenced to 32 months' imprisonment, which was uplifted to reflect the racial aggravation.

On 1 November 2025, the 29-year-old defendant from Redditch, was arrested for unrelated matters. During the arrest, he became threatening and directed homophobic abuse towards the arresting officer. He was subsequently charged with a homophobically aggravated public order act offence. The defendant initially entered a not guilty plea but changed this to guilty on 9 December at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court. He was sentenced to a four-week custodial sentence which was uplifted from a community order to reflect the hate crime element.

On 8 May 2025, the 55-year-old defendant from Telford was in a store in Sutton Coldfield town centre. When he was challenged by a member of staff, he responded with  racially abusive language. He was subsequently charged with a racially aggravated public order offence and admitted the offence at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 2 December 2025. He was sentenced to 18 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, which was uplifted from a community order to reflect the hate crime element.

On 25 August 2025, the 64-year-old defendant from Birmingham became involved in a disagreement with his neighbour, during which he used homophobic language. He was subsequently prosecuted for a homophobically aggravated public order act offence and appeared before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 1 December. He was made subject to a community order with 80 hours of unpaid work which was uplifted from 50 hours to reflect the hate crime element. He was also ordered to pay £85 compensation to the victim. 

On 14 August 2025, the 33-year-old defendant from Cornwall was at Penzance railway station when he caused a disturbance. After staff members confronted him about his conduct, he responded with homophobic abuse. He was charged with one homophobically aggravated public order offence. At Truro Magistrates’ Court on 4 December 2025, he admitted the offence and was fined £120 which was uplifted from £80 to reflect the hate crime aspect. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim.
