In April 2026, the CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ and Crown Court units successfully prosecuted various hate crime cases. Some of the cases are featured below.

A 54-year-old woman from Warwickshire has been jailed following  a series of racially aggravated offences over two days. On 21 and 22 June 2024, the defendant  posted notes and letters of a racially or religiously offensive nature, to 11 different victims and also caused damage to a number of properties. She admitted several counts of causing racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress and was sentenced to 36 weeks' imprisonment, uplifted from 24 weeks to reflect the racial aggravation.

A 43-year-old man from Shropshire has been sentenced following a racially aggravated assault on a shopkeeper. On 26 November 2025, the defendant entered a shop and demanded the shopkeeper return a £2 payment he had made earlier. When told the till could not be opened, he became aggressive and assaulted the shopkeeper while directing racial abuse towards him. On 1 April 2026, he admitted racially aggravated common assault and racially aggravated fear or provocation of violence at Shrewsbury Crown Court. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment which was uplifted to six months. This sentence ran consecutively to a separate sentence for robbery, bringing his total sentence to four years and six months' imprisonment.

A 43-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman from Birmingham have been convicted of racially aggravated offences following an incident at a Birmingham hotel. On 14 December 2024, the male defendant was refused further alcohol and became racially abusive towards staff. He assaulted the first victim and in the ensuing scuffle both fell to the floor. The female defendant attempted to strike the first victim with her bag whilst shouting racist and religious abuse, before throwing a bottle which struck the second victim in the face. The first victim sustained a minor head injury and pain to the chest and lower back. The offences were captured on CCTV. When police arrived, both defendants were arrested. The male defendant continued to direct racial abuse towards one of the officers. Both defendants were charged with racially aggravated assault and racially aggravated public order offences. The male defendant pleaded guilty to one offence at the first hearing at Birmingham Magistrates' Court. The remaining charges proceeded to trial on 24 April 2026, when he changed his pleas to guilty. He was sentenced to 16 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for two years, with a rehabilitation activity requirement of 20 days. He was also ordered to pay £300 compensation. The female defendant pleaded guilty to all charges. Her case was adjourned for sentence and on 1 September 2025 she received an 18-month community order with a rehabilitation activity requirement of 25 days and a fine of £200. She was also ordered to pay £150 compensation.

A 31-year-old woman from Dudley has been convicted of racially aggravated harassment against her neighbour following a trial. The defendant was interviewed and denied the offences. She pleaded not guilty at the first hearing at Dudley Magistrates' Court. The case proceeded to trial at Walsall Magistrates' Court on 23 April 2026, where she was convicted.
