Driver and passenger jailed over motorcyclist death
A driver and passenger in the same car have both been jailed after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Surrey.
Justin Whelan pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, after his car crashed into a motorbike being ridden by Kevin Jones in Wanborough on a 90-degree bend. The car was on the wrong side of the road when the collision occurred in October 2023.
Kayleigh Grant, who was in the passenger seat at the time, was found guilty of aiding and abetting dangerous driving after mobile phone footage showed her encouraging Whelan, as she filmed the dashboard of the car. A mile before the collision, CCTV showed that the car was driving at between 83 and 93 miles an hour.
Craig Warsama from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Whelan took a deliberate decision to drive dangerously at high speeds, knowing the risk that he posed to other road users and those in his own vehicle. Tragically his dangerous actions that day led to the death of Kevin Jones.
“Although Whelan was the driver, we were able to prove that Grant was complicit in the crash, with footage showing her delighting in the speed the car was travelling at.
“We would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of Kevin.
“Anyone who encourages others to drive in such an appalling way with no regard for the safety of others needs to understand that, where there is sufficient evidence, they too face the risk of being prosecuted and jailed for their actions.”
