Sentenced: Maths teacher who groomed and sexually abused a student
A teacher who groomed and sexually abused one of his students ten years ago has been sentenced today at Bolton Crown Court.
Daniel Rowe, 39, was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years, and he must complete 25 days rehabilitation. At the prosecution’s request, he was ordered to comply with a 10 year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was barred from working with children for 10 years. A 10 year restraining order was also put in place to prevent any further contact with the victim.
Wendy V Lloyd, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said:
“Daniel Rowe was in a position of trust as a teacher.
"He abused his position to groom and exploit a student, with no thought for the lasting impact it would have on her.
"Every parent expects their children to be safe while they are at school or college; Rowe's actions have eroded that trust.
"I would like to thank the victim for supporting the prosecution. I hope she can start to move forward knowing her support has meant Rowe will face the consequences of his actions.
“This case should send a clear message to perpetrators of sexual abuse, the Crown Prosecution Service will not hesitate to prosecute abusers, no matter how much time has passed since they committed their crimes.”
In the summer of 2015, Daniel Rowe, who was working as a maths teacher in the Greater Manchester Area, was warned by a senior colleague regarding what appeared to be an inappropriately close relationship between him and a student.
He had been seen working with a student alone, which was deemed to be an unsafe working practice and after a member of staff reported concerns, was informed of this in a formal meeting.
Following this meeting and to avoid further attention on his interactions with the student, Rowe began messaging the student in secret.
Rowe groomed the teenager, telling her that she should not date other boys and he also encouraged her to go to a university where he had connections; and told her that he wanted to date her himself when she had left school.
He then began to sexually abuse her via facetime, first encouraging her to undress on camera and later encouraging her to engage in sexual activity.
Rowe was arrested on 12 April 2021, and refused to comment during his police interview.
He went on to plead not guilty and was convicted after trial at Bolton Crown Court on 14 August 2025.
