Guilty: Patient who attempted to murder a nurse at Oldham Royal Hospital

|News, Violent crime

A patient who attempted to murder a nurse with scissors, causing her to end up in intensive care, has been found guilty following a trial at Minshull Street Crown Court.

Romon Haque, 38, viciously stabbed the nurse with scissors in an unprovoked, frenzied attack.

Claire Aitken, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “Romon Haque’s savage attack of a nurse who was carrying out her duties, was truly appalling.

“After seeing that the nurse was pre-occupied with the care for another patient, he lashed out, stabbing her repeatedly with scissors.

“The jury has agreed that his attack with a bladed weapon, so vicious and aggressive in its intensity, can only have been intended to end her life.

“Haque’s brutal actions have severely affected her, causing her to end up in intensive care and lasting physical and mental trauma.

"I can only hope she can find some comfort knowing that Haque will now face the consequences of his actions that day.”

Haque had been admitted to the Royal Oldham Hospital on 8 January 2025, initially for a mental health assessment, but it was later determined the symptoms he was experiencing were caused by drug and alcohol withdrawal.

On 11 January 2025, around 10.35pm, Haque asked the nurse for medication, but she was with another patient.

Haque took exception to that. He stood up and went to the door of the bay and a few minutes later, with no warning, lunged himself at the nurse who was attending to a different patient.

Haque was armed with scissors and struck her from behind, in the neck, and as she turned and tried to defend herself, she was stabbed forehead, wrist and the palm of her hand.

The attack only stopped when a member of staff stepped in and managed to restrain him.

The 57-year-old nurse was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Department where she was assessed and remained in intensive care overnight.

She suffered stab wounds to her neck, wrist and hand and has since undergone surgery to treat the wound to her wrist.

Haque was arrested by police and made no comment in his police interview apart from to say that he hears voices.

Following his appearance at court, Haque was assessed and deemed fit to stand trial by two psychiatrists.

On 7 July 2025, Haque pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article but not guilty to attempted murder.

He accepted that he had attacked the nurse and caused serious injuries but claimed that he had no intention to kill her.

On 18 July 2025, Haque was found guilty of attempted murder and will be sentenced on 15 September 2025.
