A man previously jailed in France for murder has been sentenced for seriously assaulting his elderly father at the family home in Cheshire.

Ian Griffin, 57, was convicted by a French court in December 2014 for the murder of his partner in Paris and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment. He was released in 2016 on medical grounds, subject to conditions.

On 30 April 2025, Griffin caused disorder at his parents’ home in Winwick. Neighbours heard him shouting and making threats towards his parents, aged in their 80s.

Griffin then directed his abuse towards the neighbours, who were in their own garden at the time, and made threats to burn the neighbours’ house down.

On 1 May 2025, police were called to the address after a concerned relative was unable to make contact with his father.

Officers found Griffin’s father on a sofa with significant facial injuries. Griffin was present in the room and was arrested.

The victim suffered serious injuries during a sustained attack, including a fractured nose and bruising to his face, back and legs.

Griffin denied the offences in interview but later pleaded guilty on 15 April 2026 at Liverpool Crown Court to inflicting grievous bodily harm and threatening to damage property belonging to the neighbours.

Today (14 September 2026), at Liverpool Crown Court, he was sentenced to a total of six years' imprisonment’ for grievous bodily harm and threats to damage property.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Angie Rowan, of CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: “Ian Griffin carried out a serious assault on his elderly father, causing significant injury.

“This offence followed a period of escalating tension within the family and culminated in violence inside the family home.

“The prosecution carefully considered the evidence, and Griffin’s guilty plea ensured that his father and other witnesses did not have to give evidence at trial.

“Our thoughts remain with the victims, who have shown considerable strength throughout what has been a very difficult case.”
