Three members of a motorcycle club have been sentenced for violent disorder after they assaulted the president of another club and his partner in a planned attack in the Forest of Dean.

Joshua Bell and Paul Price both pleaded guilty to the offence. The third man, Mark Gibson, had denied the charge but was convicted following a trial in June 2026.

Bell was sentenced to 17 months' imprisonment today. Price was given a suspended sentence of 14 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, and Gibson received a suspended sentence of 24 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years.

A fourth man, Luke Cole, will be sentenced on 2 September.

Six other men – Robert Greenacre, Ashley Lauterdale, Kyle Matthews, Darren Rimmer, Lee Rogers and Billy Timmins – were sentenced in June 2026 for causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and other offences, for their roles in the attack.

Charlotte Ream of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “This was a terrifying attack carried out by a large group in broad daylight and in a public place.

“Our prosecutors proved that the attack was planned and was motivated by Stephen’s membership of a different motorcycle club. This was supported by both the deliberate targeting of Stephen while he was separated from his own group, and the taking of his Outlaws Motorcycle Club leather vest as some sort of trophy by his attackers.

“Although the incident lasted less than a minute, it resulted in very significant injuries to Stephen, who was left barely conscious, with head injuries that included a broken jaw and a bleed on his brain.

“While Stephen was clearly the focus of the attack, his partner Emma was also beaten as she tried to protect him. We hope today’s outcome provides a sense of closure, and our thoughts remain with them both.”

Stephen Barclay, who is president of the Forest of Dean Outlaws Motorcycle Club, and his partner Emma Makey, were attacked on 5 April 2025 by a large group of men. The couple had been eating near the Clock Tower in Market Place, Coleford, when five vehicles pulled up and the men got out.

The men were all members or affiliates of the Rock Machine Motorcycle Club. Some of the men were armed with weapons, including a metal scaffolding pole, a bat or bats and possibly a hammer.

During the assault that followed, Emma was struck in the hand with a weapon that may have been a hammer, and Stephen was knocked to the ground, where he was struck with a bat and a metal pole, while also being punched and kicked by multiple assailants.

Stephen was wearing his Outlaws ‘cut’, which is a leather vest bearing the Outlaws Motorcycle Club insignia and his rank of president. This was removed from him during the assault, and as the attackers returned to their respective vehicles, leaving Stephen and Emma on the floor, they took it with them.

After losing consciousness temporarily at the scene, Stephen was transported to Southmead Hospital, where he was treated for injuries that included a broken nose, two fractures to the jaw and bleeding on the brain.
