CPS West Midlands: Successful Hate Crime Cases – May 2026

In May 2026, the CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ and Crown Court units successfully prosecuted various hate crime cases. Some of the cases are featured below.

A 28-year-old man from Barnsley has been sentenced for racially aggravated offences committed against a taxi driver in Worcestershire. On 5 July 2025, whilst being carried as a passenger, the defendant became racially abusive towards the driver when asked to confirm his destination. He proceeded to assault the driver. When police arrived, the defendant continued to shout racist abuse following his arrest. In interview, he was apologetic about the racial abuse but denied any assault. He was charged with racially aggravated public order, racially aggravated common assault and intentional strangulation. On 9 October 2025, he pleaded guilty to the racially aggravated public order offence at Worcester Magistrates' Court and entered not guilty pleas to the remaining charges. On 20 April 2026, he was found guilty of racially aggravated common assault and not guilty of intentional strangulation following a trial. On 12 May 2026, he was sentenced at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court to an 18-month community order comprising a rehabilitation activity requirement of 120 days, uplifted from 80 days to reflect the hate crime element, and 80 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £150 compensation.

A couple from Coventry have been sentenced following a racially aggravated assault on a security guard at a Coventry hotel. On 30 March 2025, both defendants refused to leave the hotel following the conclusion of an event. When the security guard attempted to remove them, they racially abused and attacked him, with one defendant kicking him and both throwing furniture at him, causing injury to his knee. Both defendants were arrested when police arrived. The 45-year-old female defendant stated in interview that she had no recollection of events due to intoxication. The male defendant, 41, denied any wrongdoing. Both were charged with racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm. On 18 February 2026, the female defendant pleaded guilty at Coventry Magistrates' Court. She was sentenced on 5 May 2026 to a 12-month community order with a rehabilitation activity requirement of 20 days, a 90-day alcohol monitoring requirement, a six-month exclusion from the hotel and a fine of £180, uplifted from £120 to reflect the hate crime element. She was also ordered to pay £100 compensation. The male defendant changed his plea to guilty at Coventry Magistrates' Court on 13 May 2026. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order with a rehabilitation activity requirement of 20 days and a fine uplifted from a Band C to a Band D fine to reflect the hate crime element.

A 36-year-old man from Dudley has been jailed for 30 months after pleading guilty to possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, assaulting an emergency worker, racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm and distress, and criminal damage. Officers were called to a domestic incident at an address on 12 September 2025. On arrival, they were confronted by the defendant, who was in possession of a firearm, threatened officers, and subjected them to racial abuse. He pleaded guilty at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 18 February 2026 and was sentenced on 14 May 2026. The firearms offence carried a sentence of 45 months, uplifted from 36 months to reflect the racially aggravated nature of the offending, with a one-third credit applied for his guilty plea. All other offences were ordered to run concurrently.
