Football banning order for man who chose racism over patriotism during Women’s Euro 2025

A man who made vile racist comments on social media about an England footballer has been banned from football matches as part of his sentence.

Nigel Dewale, 60, was sentenced at Blackburn Magistrates Court to six weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, for sending grossly offensive communications to Jess Carter and for possession of an offensive weapon in a private place.

During the suspension period he must complete ten rehabilitation days and must abide by a three month curfew. He was also given a four-year football banning order.

John Moran for the Crown Prosecution Service said: “When England’s women were successfully winning a second straight Euros victory, Dewale chose racism over patriotism.

“This case should be a stark reminder to so-called keyboard warriors: online actions have consequences.

“This type of social media offending will not be tolerated. Those who peddle hate, on or off the pitch, will be brought to justice.

“We work closely with football authorities including the Premier League and the Football Association, as well as police, clubs, and charities to stamp out hate in football.

“Hate crime can have an enormous impact on players and their mental health. The CPS takes this kind of offending very seriously and this case shows that where offensive content is reported to the police, we can and will bring offenders to justice.”

Between 20 and 22 July 2025, a video was posted on TikTok from someone discussing the racism Jess Carter was subjected to at Euro 2025.

Dewale posted hateful racist comments about the footballer, in full view of anyone on the social media platform.

Dewale was arrested on 28 August 2025. During a search of his home an extendable baton was found.

During his police interview he accepted he had the baton and admitted that he posted the comments on TikTok.

He pleaded guilty on 9 January 2026 at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court.
