CPS West Midlands: Successful Hate Crime Cases – November 2025
In November 2025, the CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ and Crown Court units successfully prosecuted various hate crime cases. Below are some of the cases.
A Birmingham man has been jailed for 20 weeks after spitting at and racially abusing a shop security guard in Solihull. On 7 November 2025, the 41-year-old defendant attempted to steal items from a large department store. When challenged by security staff after leaving the store, he became threatening and repeatedly spat at one member of security while shouting racial abuse. He was charged with racially aggravated assault by beating and a racially aggravated public order offence. He pleaded guilty to all offences at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on 10 December. The defendant received a 20-week custody sentence for the racially aggravated assault by beating offence, uplifted from 15 weeks to reflect the hate crime element. He received a 12-week custodial sentence for the racially aggravated public order offence, uplifted from 9 weeks. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim.
A man from Birmingham has been jailed for 12 weeks after racially abusing a shop worker who challenged him over theft. On 10 November 2025, the 32-year-old defendant stole items from a store in Birmingham town centre. When challenged by a shop worker, he became racially abusive towards her. He was charged with theft from a shop and a racially aggravated public order offence. He appeared before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on 15 November and pleaded guilty to both offences. The defendant received a 12-week custodial sentence for the racially aggravated public order offence, uplifted from 9 weeks to reflect the hate crime element. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim.
A man has been sentenced to 200 hours unpaid work after subjecting a railway worker to homophobic abuse at Gatwick Airport Railway Station. On 1 March 2025, the 23-year-old defendant from Buckinghamshire directed homophobic abuse towards a member of railway staff during a dispute over paying a fare. He was arrested and charged with a homophobically aggravated public order offence. He pleaded guilty at Crawley Magistrates' Court on 12 November 2025. The defendant was made subject to a community order with an unpaid work requirement of 200 hours, uplifted from 150 hours to reflect the hate crime element.
A man has been given an 18-month community order after making racially aggravated comments towards members of the public in Telford town centre. On 23 January 2025, the 24-year-old defendant from Telford was outside a premise in the town centre when police were called about his conduct. He continued to be abusive and threatening, making numerous racially aggravated comments towards members of the public. He was charged with a racially aggravated public order offence and pleaded guilty at Telford Magistrates' Court on 12 November 2025. The defendant received a community order for 18 months, uplifted from 12 months to reflect the hate crime element. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim.
A man has been given an 18-month community order after racially abusing a female passenger on a train. On 8 November 2022, police received a call from a train conductor reporting that the 62-year-old defendant from Knutsford was being racially abusive towards a female passenger, causing her distress. When police attended and arrested him, he was verbally abusive towards officers. Following a trial, he was convicted of assault and racially aggravated intentional harassment. On 14 October 2025, he was sentenced at court to a community order for 18 months, uplifted from 12 months to reflect the hate crime element.
A man has been jailed for 30 months after violently attacking his ex-partner and her new partner before racially abusing a police officer. On 1 January 2025, the 34-year-old defendant from Bedworth attended his ex-partner's address while he was intoxicated. He became aggressive and attacked her new partner by repeatedly punching and kicking her and pulling her hair out. When his ex-partner tried to help, she too was attacked and repeatedly punched. On arrest he became violent, spitting at two officers and attempting to bite one of them. He then made racially abusive comments towards one of the officers. He admitted assault and racially aggravated intentional harassment. On 9 October 2025, he was sentenced to a total of 30 months' imprisonment. The charge of racially aggravated intentional harassment was uplifted to reflect the hate crime element.
