CPS West Midlands: Successful Hate Crime Cases – October 2025

In October 2025, the CPS West Midlands Magistrates’ and Crown Court units successfully prosecuted various hate crime cases. Below are some of the cases.

A 43-year-old man from Birmingham has been jailed for committing racially and homophobically aggravated offences against police officers. On 5 April 2025, the defendant was arrested in relation to an unrelated matter. During the journey in the police van, he spat blood across the walls before subjecting the officers to both racial and homophobic abuse. Upon arrival at custody, the defendant spat blood over one of the officers. He was charged with assault on an emergency worker, criminal damage and a racially aggravated public order offence. He pleaded guilty to all offences and was sentenced to 18 weeks' imprisonment on 1 October 2025.

A 48-year-old man from Greenwich has been sentenced for racially and homophobically aggravated offences at a railway station. On 1 April 2025, the defendant became disruptive on the platform at Ealing railway station. His behaviour escalated and he assaulted two members of railway staff. When police attended, he became racially and homophobically abusive towards the officers. He was charged with two counts of assault, one racially aggravated public order offence and one homophobically aggravated public order offence. He pleaded guilty to all charges at Bromley Magistrates' Court on 24 October 2025. He received a 12-month suspended sentence. The suspension period for the hate crime offences was uplifted from four weeks to six weeks to reflect the hate crime element. He was also ordered to pay £75 compensation to both victims.

A 39-year-old man from Kidderminster has been jailed for a racially aggravated harassment campaign against his former partner. Between February 2024 and May 2025, the defendant repeatedly harassed the victim and was racially abusive. He was charged with one racially aggravated harassment offence and pleaded not guilty. He was subsequently convicted following trial. At Kidderminster Magistrates' Court on 22 October 2025, he was sentenced to 20 weeks' imprisonment, which included a four-week uplift to reflect the hate crime element. He was also made subject to a restraining order for five years.

A 32-year-old woman from Sandwell has been sentenced for racially and homophobically aggravated offences at a public house. On 11 January 2025, the defendant was asked to leave the public house due to her behaviour. She became racially and homophobically abusive and assaulted two members of staff. During the assault, she was racially abusive towards one complainant and directed homophobic abuse towards the other. She was charged with two racially aggravated offences and two homophobically aggravated offences. She pleaded guilty to all charges at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on 21 October 2025. She was sentenced to 16 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, which was uplifted from a community order to reflect the hate crime element. She was also ordered to pay £150 compensation to both victims.

A 48-year-old man from Walsall has been jailed following a racially aggravated harassment campaign against his neighbour. Between April and May 2025, the defendant repeatedly harassed the complainant and was racially abusive several times. He was charged with a racially aggravated harassment offence and initially pleaded not guilty. At Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on 21 October 2025, he changed his plea to guilty. He was sentenced to 24 weeks' imprisonment, which was uplifted from 16 weeks to reflect the hate crime element.
