Response

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) holds some information within the scope of your request in relation to data held on suspects and defendants where the cases originated in the Greater Manchester Police Force Area in each of the last five financial years ending March 2024.

Please see attached Excel document labelled ‘DATA 12370 ’. The ‘Data’ tab shows the following information in response to each numbered point of your request:

  1. The first line in ‘Table 1’ (rape flagged) and the first line in ‘Table 2’ (sexual offences excluding rape flagged) shows the number of completed pre-charge decisions for suspects flagged as rape and as sexual offences excluding rape flagged.
  2. The second line in ‘Table 1’ and the second line in ‘Table 2’ shows the number of suspects where a decision to charge has been authorised by the CPS.
  3. The third line in ‘Table 1’ and the third line in ‘Table 2’ shows the number where ‘No Further Action’ decision has been made.
  4. The fourth line in the ‘Table 1’ and the fourth line in ‘Table 2’ shows the number of ‘No Further Action’ decisions due to victim attrition.
  5. ‘Table 3’ shows the number of prosecutions, by defendant flagged as rape, and sexual offences excluding those flagged as rape, where a contest or trial outcome was recorded. The data in ‘Table 3’ is not a subset of the pre-charge data set out in Tables 1 and 2, rather it is prosecution data. For the avoidance of doubt, both data sets (Tables 1&2, and Table 3) are discrete from each other.

The data should be considered in conjunction with the caveats and definitions contained within the ‘Caveats’ tab, which you should read carefully.
