Police officers charged following fatal road collision in south east London

The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised criminal charges against two police officers following a fatal road collision involving a pregnant woman in south east London in 2024.

A 38-year-old woman was killed after her vehicle was involved in a collision with a police vehicle on Eltham Road on 17 October 2024. Her unborn child could not be saved.

Two Metropolitan Police officers, one of whom is no longer with the force, were driving in separate unmarked police cars when the collision took place.

PC Chris Johnson, 56, the driver of the police vehicle involved in the collision, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Former PC Danny Tomkins, 35, the driver of the second police vehicle, has been charged with dangerous driving, in relation to the standard of his driving.

Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Special Crime Division, said: “Following a thorough review of the evidence in this case, we have authorised criminal charges against one current and one former police officer.

“The charges relate to the death of a 38-year-old woman in a fatal road traffic collision on Eltham Road, south east London on 17 October 2024.

“Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.

“We have worked closely with the Independent Office for Police Conduct as it carried out its investigation.

“We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against these defendants are active and that they have the right to a fair trial.

“It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

The two defendants are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May 2026.
