A patient who attempted to murder a nurse with scissors, causing her to end up in intensive care, has been found guilty following a trial at Minshull Street Crown Court.

Romon Haque, 38, viciously stabbed the nurse with scissors in an unprovoked, frenzied attack.

Claire Aitken, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “Romon Haque’s savage attack of a nurse who was carrying out her duties, was truly appalling.

“After seeing that the nurse was pre-occupied with the care for another patient, he lashed out, stabbing her repeatedly with scissors.

“The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the prosecution of two men in relation to the death of a 13-month-old boy in Blackpool.

A psychiatrist who inappropriately touched his patients has been found guilty of three counts of sexual assault following a trial at Bolton Crown Court.

Dr Vijay Gaikwad, 44, denied sexually assaulting his patients, claiming he had not conducted physical examinations of the three women.

Gill Petrovic, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “As a Doctor, Vijay Gaikwad was trusted by his patients.

“He abused that trust by sexually assaulting three patients in his care.

A man has been jailed today for causing the death of three-year-old Louisa (Lulu) Palmisano, after the van he was driving struck a tram and mounted the pavement.

Rawal Rehman, 36, was jailed at Manchester Crown Court for 12 years and disqualified from driving for over 13 years.

On 22 February 2025 at around 10am, Rehman was driving a Mercedes sprinter van in Manchester when he careered into Lulu and her parents who were holding hands on the pavement, causing Lulu fatal injuries.

Nicola Wells, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “Four Just Stop Oil protesters have been sentenced today after they were intercepted by the police on route to cause disruption at Manchester Airport on 5 August 2024.

“This was a targeted attack, at the height of summer, against one of the country’s busiest airports, where they planned to glue themselves to the taxiways of the airport and cause serious disruption to the travel plans of tens of thousands of individuals. 

Company Director, Jake Balmforth, 35, has been jailed for five years for manslaughter, after an outbreak of violence in a Blackpool pub led to the death of Anthony Johnson. A nine year football banning order was also imposed.

Katie Lord, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “This case is a tragic reminder that one punch can kill.

“When violence broke out between rival football fans in a Blackpool pub, Jake Balmforth punched Anthony Johnson, with fatal consequences.
