Two men who took drugs in a speeding car jailed for the death of another driver
A dangerous driver who crashed into a man while driving 139mph after inhaling canisters of laughing gas has been jailed for 11 years and 8 months.
Uways Hussain, 20, of Marley Road, Manchester, drove a Golf GTi through a red light at over 130mph and crashed into a Volvo car being driven by Sylvester Abayomi on Kingsway in Manchester in the early hours of 9 March 2026.
Mr Abayomi had been making his way to work. Sadly he suffered fatal chest injuries in the collision and died at the scene.
In the hours leading up to the incident Hussain and his passenger Usmon Mahmood, 23, of Buller Road, Manchester, the owner of the car, had been filming themselves inhaling canisters of nitrous oxide while the car was being driven at extremely high speeds.
Immediately after the collision, an emergency call was automatically made from Hussain’s Apple watch which had detected the crash.
The watch recorded the two men discussing whether they should report the car as stolen. Hussain was recorded shouting for Mahmood to order a taxi as they made off from the scene, leaving Mr Abayomi to die.
The emergency call led the police to the men who were found two roads away from the crash. When they saw the police, they ran in opposite directions but were caught and arrested. Several discarded nitrous oxide cannisters were found nearby.
Both men denied all knowledge but at a hearing on 16 April 2026 at Manchester Crown Court, Hussain pleaded guilty to casing death by dangerous driving and Mahmood pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving.
Today (29 May 2026) at Manchester Crown Court, Hussain was jailed for 11 years and 8 months. Mahmood was jailed for 12 years and 9 months.
Victim personal statements from Mr Abayomi'’s partner and brother, were read to the court, outlining the devastation that the incident has caused.
Joanna White of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Uways Hussain was recklessly driving Usmon Mahmood’s high-performance car, without insurance, and at more than 130mph after consuming nitrous oxide for hours prior to the fatal collision.
“The car collided with the victim’s vehicle and killed him. Both defendants ran from the scene after collecting their belongings and discussed how they could cover up their actions.
“Mr Abayomi was a kind, well-loved and hardworking man who left for work on the morning of 9 March, never to return.
“His life was cruelly cut short by the irresponsible actions of two men who selfishly believed they could treat a powerful car like a toy to play with.
“No sentence will ever lessen the devastation felt by so many who loved Mr Abayomi. The Crown Prosecution Service hopes that now the perpetrators have been brought to justice, his family can get some closure.”
