Mother convicted of murdering baby son after giving fatal mixture of milk and medication
A 36‑year‑old woman has been convicted of murdering her baby son after giving him a fatal mixture of milk and medication.
Emma Barnett was found guilty today following a trial at Cambridge Crown Court.
On the day of an important family court hearing, Barnett collected medication from a pharmacy while caring for her baby, Oakley.
After learning that her son, Oakley, was to be removed from her care, Barnett left the hearing and avoided contact from those concerned about her and her child.
She was later reported missing. During a police search of her home, officers discovered Barnett and Oakley concealed in a loft space.
Officers spoke to Barnett by phone and through the loft hatch. She initially told them that Oakley was sleeping, before stating: “I have killed him”
Emergency services attended but Oakley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Evidence presented at court showed that Barnett had prepared a bottle containing a mixture of milk and medication, which she gave to Oakley, causing his death.
Sentencing will take place at Cambridge Crown Court on Friday, 5 June 2026.
Nicola Pope, Senior Crown Prosecutor, said: “This was an extremely tragic case, which had a profound impact on everyone involved.
“Emma Barnett deliberately gave her baby son a dangerous mixture containing medication which proved fatal.
“Our prosecution case relied on a detailed and careful analysis of the evidence from the police investigation, including expert medical evidence, to establish how Oakley came to die.
“I hope that today’s outcome provides some measure of peace to Oakley’s family and loved ones during this deeply upsetting time.”
