Pawel Relowicz guilty of murdering 21-year-old Hull student Libby Squire

|News, Violent crime , Sexual offences

Meat plant worker and father-of-two, Pawel Relowicz, 25, has been found guilty today (11 February) at Sheffield Crown Court of the rape and murder of 21-year-old Libby Squire on 1 February 2019.

Libby, a philosophy student, disappeared after a night out with friends in Hull on 31 January 2019. After she was refused entry to a nightclub, her friends put her in a taxi to her home address, but she never got there. A massive search and rescue operation commenced, and her body was found in the Humber Estuary seven weeks later on 20 March.

Libby had been dropped near to her home address by the taxi but had wandered away. Members of the public had seen her, alone and intoxicated, that night and had tried to help her but she had become agitated to the point that they gave up their efforts.

Analysis of CCTV undertaken by Humberside Police showed that Relowicz, who lived close to Libby’s home, had been cruising around the area in his car. He came across Libby, drunk and vulnerable, in Beverley Road. She got in his car and he drove her to a remote spot near playing fields on Oak Road. He raped and killed her before depositing her body in the River Hull which borders the playing fields.

Gerry Wareham, from the CPS, said: “Pawel Relowicz has today been found guilty of the murder and rape of Libby
Squire.

“Relowicz robbed a young and vibrant woman of her life and her future. His actions have left her family and friends devastated.

“Relowicz invented a web of lies to explain his actions that night, insisting throughout that he had tried to help Libby find her way home.

“Nothing could be further from the truth. Far from being a good Samaritan, Relowicz preyed upon her, he took advantage of her vulnerable and distressed state and then he raped and murdered her.

“I cannot begin to imagine the suffering Libby’s family are enduring. I can only hope that today’s verdict can bring them some measure of comfort. Our thoughts remain with them.”
