Jonathan Corfield, 39, was sentenced today (23 January) at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for the offences which occurred in Staffordshire on 12 July last year. He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life, and will be placed on the Sex Offenders' Register.

Corfield, from Leek, grabbed the child and dragged her into a bush where he physically and sexually assaulted her.

The victim fought him off bravely by kicking and slapping him before escaping to alert her parents.

He was arrested a few weeks later by Staffordshire Police and subsequently charged.

At the plea hearing in Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in November 2019, Corfield pleaded guilty to attempted kidnap and sexual assault of a child under 13. Corfield previously pleaded guilty to assault at a hearing in August 2019.

Sarah Pedley, from the CPS, said: “As a father himself, Corfield acted out every parent’s worst nightmare and he showed no humanity to the child he attacked for his own sexual gratification. The victim and her family have been severely traumatised by his actions and one can only hope that with time, they can recover from this ordeal.

“The outcome could have been so much worse had Corfield been more successful in carrying out his intentions and I commend the victim for her bravery in fighting off her attacker.

“Corfield is a dangerous predator who will now spend a considerable amount of time behind bars for his actions. I hope today’s sentencing serves as a deterrent to offenders who commit these types of crimes that they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
