Five men convicted of the murder of Reece Cox

|News, Violent crime

Five men have been found guilty of the murder of Reece Cox.

Shaquel Halliday, Wayne Burke, Shane Jones, Adam Ashwin, and Sebastian Jones aged between 19 and 26, were convicted today (7 May 2021) at Wolverhampton Crown Court following a trial that lasted four weeks. A sixth man, Ryan Nicklin, was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter.

On 15 August 2020, Reece Cox, 24, had been enjoying an evening out in Sedgley. At approximately 10 pm that same day, he was standing outside The Clifton public house when disorder broke out in the street.

Grant Danbury, who was being assaulted by a group of males, ran towards The Clifton, where he ended up in a doorway, being punched and kicked by several males.

CCTV footage showed Reece Cox intervening and moving people away, which helped Grant Danbury escape and run inside the Clifton. However, the group of males then turned their attention to Reece Cox.

They threw punches at him and pulled him to the ground, holding his clothing while they kicked and punched him on his body, head and neck. Although he received medical treatment at the scene, his injuries were fatal.

Mobile phone footage of the violence was uploaded to social media and this, together with CCTV footage, resulted in the identification of the participants.

Lesley Milner of the CPS said: “Reece Cox was the victim of senseless violence; he sadly lost his life because he intervened to help another. Today, his attackers have been convicted of their crimes. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
