Driving instructor convicted of rape and child sexual offences

|News, Sexual offences

Martyn James Rees (37) has today (22/3/19) been convicted of rape, child sexual offences, possession of extreme pornography, sexual assault and attempted sexual assault following a trial at Stoke Crown Court. He was convicted of possessing class B drugs, making indecent images of children, sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault after pleading guilty to these charges at an earlier hearing.

The Court heard how a 14-year-old girl had been reported missing after she failed to return to her Care Placement after school. She appeared at school the following morning in a dishevelled state and disclosed that she had been raped by Rees.

An investigation commenced which revealed images and video footage of Rees sexually assaulting a further victim whilst she lay unconscious. It was later discovered that this was a student who had received driving lessons from Rees.

Rees will be sentenced at a future date.

Tamina Greaves from the CPS said: “This was a distressing case where the offender has abused his position as a driving instructor to prey sexually on young females.

“He was found to be in possession of extreme pornography, indecent images of children and his internet search history revealed his sexual interest in children.

“There were also 29 clips of Rees covertly recording intimate body parts of young female driving students. Some of this was introduced to the jury as bad character evidence.

“I would like to commend the bravery of the victims in coming forward as this enabled the CPS to bring 23 charges on this complex case.”
