Brinsford prisoner sentenced for ‘one punch’ death
An inmate who killed a fellow inmate with a single punch has been sentenced to 27 months' imprisonment, with an extended licence of 12 months.
Abdi Esa, 21, was sentenced today (21 April 2021) at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to manslaughter at an earlier hearing.
On 5 December 2020, Esa, a serving inmate at HMP YOI Brinsford, assaulted John Henry Smith, 26. He punched Mr Smith once to the side of his head, causing him to fall and hit his head initially against a door frame, then on the ground. The force of the punch broke his jaw and rendered him unconscious.
As a result of the assault, Mr Smith sustained severe brain injuries from which he could not recover and subsequently died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, the following day.
Due to the overwhelming evidence, Esa pleaded guilty to manslaughter on 22 January 2021 at Birmingham Crown Court.
Sabhia Pathan of the CPS said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack. Abdi Esa struck Mr Smith from behind while he chatted to two other inmates and was not prepared for the attack. His reckless actions led to the death of Mr Smith.
“Esa was due to be released in May 2021, but he will now remain in prison for considerably more time where he will have time to reflect on his actions.”
