Southampton man guilty of attempting to murder woman in the New Forest

|News, Violent crime

A 27-year-old-man has been found guilty of attempting to murder a woman after he seriously assaulted her and tried to drown her in boggy water by the side of Rollestone Road, Beaulieu.

Awaas Deader, from Portswood, was found guilty of attempted murder by a jury at Southampton Crown Court on 22 August 2022.

He was sentenced to a hospital order today (25 August 2022) at Southampton Crown Court.

It was only thanks to diligent members of the public who were passing by and stopped, disturbing Awaas Deader from what he was doing, that the woman survived and received the medical treatment she needed.

Samantha Lawrence, CPS Wessex Senior Crown Prosecutor, said: “Awaas Deader admitted attacking the woman involved in this traumatic incident, but tried to claim the defence of insanity as a legal excuse for his actions.

“The CPS relied on eye-witness accounts and medical evidence to prove to the jury that he was indeed fully responsible for attempted murder.

“I would like to thank the brave members of the public for stopping, calling the emergency services, and for staying with the woman to make sure she was safe. There is no doubt that their intervention saved her life.”
