The Crown Courts in Sussex are located in Hove, Brighton  and Lewes and the CPS teams deal with around 2,200 cases at these courts every year.

They also handle around 22,000 cases that are heard at the magistrates courts located in Brighton, Crawley, Hastings, Horsham and Worthing.

Amongst the high profile cases in Sussex are:

  • A major riot at Ford open prison in East Sussex on New Year's Eve 2010/11, which resulted in more than £5 million damage. Seven inmates were charged, with five of these convicted of a range of offences, including prison mutiny, violent disorder and arson with intent. Sentences handed out ranged from seven months to two and a half years.
  • The murder of Lauren Masters by her former boyfriend, who stabbed her to death in her flat in Bexhill with their two young children in the house.
  • The case of a Ducbac Vuong, who attempted to murder his wife and their baby, by setting fire to a nail salon in Hailsham.
