A man who raped a young woman he met at a bar in Bristol jailed for nine years

|News, Sexual offences

Fernando Cervi Alvarez, 25, has been sentenced to nine years' imprisonment for two offences of rape committed in 2019. Cervi Alvarez, from St Paul in Bristol, was found guilty by a jury at Bristol Crown Court on 09 July 2021 of two counts of rape.

This case involves the rape of a young woman after a night out socialising with friends in a nightclub and bars in Bristol, on 13 May 2019. CCTV images show him carrying the victim back to the basement of a block of flats in Bristol where he attacked her.

Ian Dawes of CPS South West said “This was a distressing case involving the rape of a young woman after a night out. There are often rape myths, preconceptions and bias that can occur in the way victims are portrayed in society and it is vital to understand these play no part in CPS decision-making on whether criminal charges should be brought.

“In this case we were able to make use of various special measures including allowing the victim a choice of giving evidence behind a screen or via video link. This allowed her to provide an account of the attack in an environment where she felt most comfortable.”

“As a result of her evidence and a thorough investigation by Avon & Somerset police we have convicted a dangerous predator.

“I want to thank the victim for her bravery in coming forward and supporting the prosecution despite delays caused by the pandemic. I would encourage every victim of rape and sexual assault to come forward with the confidence that the police and CPS are dedicated to securing justice for them.”
