Former preparatory school teacher jailed for non-recent sexual offences
Jeremy Malim (73, date of birth: 02/06/1945) was found guilty following a trial at Lewes Crown Court of five charges of indecent assault against three boys who had attended Brambletye School, while Mr. Malim taught there.
The charges related to incidents that occurred in the late 1970s and in the late 1990s.
Malim was the Senior Master at Brambletye and taught French at the school between 1975 and 2002. He was suspended from teaching there in 2002 following allegations of indecent assault made by two former pupils during the course of an investigation into him by Thames Valley Police.
In 2003, Malim was tried at Oxford Crown Court in connection with those allegations and further complaints relating to a former school at which he had taught. The Judge trying the case at that time stopped the prosecution over concerns at the length of time that had passed since the incidents.
In 2014, a further complaint was made to Sussex Police, who commenced a new investigation. During the current trial, the two witnesses who had made allegations in 2002 gave evidence of what had happened to them.
Ryan Richter, from the CPS, said: “The abuse followed a similar pattern for all the victims, although it occurred many years apart.
“The victims described how the defendant had singled them out as “favourites”, paying them more attention than their classmates with his tactile behaviour turning to abuse.
“The victims trusted the defendant, who was described during the trial as a popular teacher, but he used that popularity to abuse the boys in his care.
“The verdicts are a testament to the victims in this case, who have continued to seek justice throughout the years.”
He added: “The CPS gave advice and helped direct the Sussex Police investigation to bring together the evidence from the previous prosecution to build a strong case against the defendant, who continued to deny any indecent contact with the victims and put forward his good reputation, seeking to discredit them.”
