Ex-fireman jailed for raping two women

|News, Sexual offences

A 39-year-old ex-fireman has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for raping two women, after taking them home from nightclubs in Manchester city centre in October and November 2017.

James Hall was found unanimously guilty of four counts of rape following a three week trial at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court in September.

In October 2017 a woman shared a taxi with Hall and his friends from a club on Canal Street, Manchester. Even though she asked to be dropped at home, she found herself at Hall’s home address. She accepted alcohol and cocaine and then woke up to the defendant having sex with her. She fled the property and sought help at a nearby building site. Hall was arrested and denied raping her.

Five weeks later, whilst he was on bail for the first allegations, a second woman went to his home address after a night out on Canal Street. He gave her alcohol and cocaine and then she woke up to the defendant having sex with her. He begged her not to tell anyone what he had done. Eight months later she reported the offence to the police, he was arrested again and this time told police that no sex had taken place.

Gillian Petrovic for the CPS said:

"James Hall showed a clear pattern of behaviour with both women. He took them home from nightclubs when they were clearly intoxicated and gave them more drink and drugs. He then took advantage of them whilst they were incapable of giving their consent.

"After we presented the overwhelming evidence against him to the jury, including telephone evidence containing messages to the second woman describing the rape as a one-off drunken, drugged up mistake, they found him unanimously guilty of the offences.

"I would like to commend and thank both women for their bravery in coming forward and re-living their traumatic ordeals at a trial. I hope that today’s sentence goes some way to helping them move on with their lives in the knowledge that he is now in prison for his sickening offences."
