CPS North East - Stalking and Harassment Prosecutions - April 2022

To mark Stalking Awareness Week this week, below are some examples of stalking cases successfully prosecuted by CPS North East April 2022. 

The defendant was convicted after trial of stalking and of assaulting his ex-partner, after he placed a tracker on her car to monitor her movements and shoulder barged her to gain uninvited access to her garden.  He was sentenced to a community order for twelve months with rehabilitation activities and unpaid work. A restraining order was imposed for three years. 

The defendant was convicted of stalking his ex-partner of 23 years after he made numerous uninvited visits to her home over a period of months and on one occasion entered the house without permission. He was sentenced to a community order for 18 months with rehabilitation activities and an alcohol treatment requirement. A restraining order was imposed for two years. 

The defendant was convicted of stalking his estranged parents by repeatedly attending their address, banging on the door and windows and being abusive and disorderly. He was sentenced to a community order for 18 months with rehabilitation activities. A restraining order for twelve months was imposed.

The defendant was convicted of stalking his ex-partner by repeatedly calling and sending messages to her, loitering in her street, and sending cards. He was sentenced to 26 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 24 months with rehabilitation activities. A restraining order was imposed for five years.

The defendant was convicted of harassment after he had repeatedly called and attended the address of his ex-partner refusing to leave and swearing and shouting in the street. He was already subject to 14 days’ imprisonment. A restraining order was imposed for three years. 

The defendant was convicted of stalking causing serious alarm to his ex-partner after he made repeated calls to her from a withheld number, loitered outside her address, confronted her in retail premises and at a petrol station demanding she speak to him and made contact with friends and family in an attempt to reach her and attended her address uninvited. He was sentenced to 26 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 24 months with rehabilitation activities and a GPS exclusion zone. Compensation was ordered in the sum of £500.  A restraining order for three years was imposed. 

The defendant was convicted of stalking causing serious alarm or distress and of engaging in coercive and controlling behaviour in relation to his ex-partner. The court heard he would assault her, punish her for going out, isolate her, call her names and put her down, throw her medicine away, send her videos of him damaging her things, lock her in the house, call her if she was out with friends and threaten to beat her if she did not come home. He made repeated unwanted contact with her over social media and telephone notwithstanding being warned not to do so. He was sentenced to 27 months’ imprisonment. A restraining order was imposed for ten years.


The defendant was convicted of stalking after he sent unwanted messages and calls to his ex-partner, followed her in his car while she was out running and attended her home on a number of occasions. He was sentenced to an 18-month community order with rehabilitation activities. A restraining order was imposed for two years.

The defendant was convicted of stalking after he was threatening and abusive via voicemail, sent numerous messages and confronted his ex-partner in person face to face, attended her property uninvited and caused damage to her vehicle and other property and turned up places where she would be. He was sentenced to a community order for 24 months with rehabilitation activities, and a fine of £270. A restraining order was imposed for two years.

The defendant was convicted of stalking after he sent numerous unwanted messages to his ex-partner, some of which were threatening and abusive. He also attended her address making threats. He was sentenced to a community order for 18 months with rehabilitation activities. A restraining order was imposed for two years.
