Below are some examples of Domestic Abuse cases successfully prosecuted by CPS North East between Jan 2022 - Feb 2022.

The defendant was convicted of assault after he pushed his ex-partner causing her to fall to the ground following an altercation. He was sentenced to a fine of £200. A restraining order for twelve months was imposed.

The defendant was convicted of three breaches of non-molestation order after he repeatedly turned up at his mother’s house in breach of a prohibition not to do so due to previous domestic abuse. He was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment. A restraining order was imposed for twelve months reflecting the prohibitions in the previous non-molestation order.

The defendant was convicted of stalking after he made repeated and unwanted calls to his ex-partner over a period of five months. He was sentenced to an 18-month community order with rehabilitation activities and unpaid work. A restraining order for two years was imposed.

The defendant was convicted of breaching a restraining order after he attended the home of his ex-partner uninvited and let himself in. He was sentenced to eight weeks’ imprisonment and in addition the court activated a suspended sentence of a further eight weeks.

The defendant was convicted at the Crown Court of assault causing actual bodily harm and of stalking with fear of violence after he subjected his ex-partner to numerous repeated unwanted remote calls, visits to her address, threats of violence and damage, culminating in a vicious assault causing extensive bruising. He was sentenced to 14 months' imprisonment. A restraining order was imposed indefinitely.

The defendant was convicted of sending malicious communications after he posted threatening messages on Facebook relating to his father. He was sentenced to a fine of £80. A restraining order for twelve months was imposed.

The defendant was convicted of assault and criminal damage. Following an altercation in the street with his ex-partner he grabbed her by the hair and throat and threw her mobile phone to the ground and stamped on it. He was sentenced to a community order for 18 months with rehabilitation activities and ordered to pay compensation of £200. A restraining order was imposed for 18 months.

The defendant was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon after she attacked her ex-partner with a broken bottle in the street. Whilst the victim refused to support a prosecution the incident was captured on CCTV enabling the case to proceed without his evidence. She was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment suspended for 18 months with rehabilitation activities.

The defendant was convicted of harassment after sending a series of unwanted texts over a period of months to his ex-partner and confronting her in a supermarket car park. He was sentenced to an 18-month community order with rehabilitation activities and a fine of £120. Compensation was ordered in the sum of £100 and a restraining order was imposed for three years.

The defendant was convicted of stalking his ex-wife after he sent a number of unwanted emails and messages to her and her friends and sat outside her address. He was sentenced to a community order for twelve months with rehabilitation requirement activities and an alcohol treatment order. A restraining order was imposed for 18 months.

The defendant was convicted of engaging in controlling coercive behaviour towards his partner over a period of months which included inflicting violence and criminal damage, checking her mobile phone, preventing her from accessing social media, taking control of her house keys and locking her indoors. He was sentenced to a 45 months’ imprisonment. A restraining order was imposed for two years.

The defendant was convicted of assault by beating after he headbutted his ex-partner and grabbed her by the throat and arms following an argument, leaving her with extensive bruising. He was sentenced to a community order for 18 months with rehabilitation activities and a fine of £40. He was ordered to pay compensation in the sum of £200 and a restraining order was imposed for two years.
