Going beyond the role: training lawyers to support victims of serious sexual offences

Case study from North West

Cath Moss
Paralegal Business Manager North West RASSO Unit

“Thirty-nine years at the CPS has taught me many things, but perhaps the most important is that knowledge counts the most when you share it.

“My role as a Paralegal Business Manager in the North West is mainly focused on supporting Paralegal Officers, but last year I saw an opportunity to do more. Newly appointed lawyers prosecuting Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) cases were navigating complex casework systems and processes, and I knew my experience could help them do that work more efficiently and confidently.

“In the past year, I delivered a series of practical training sessions covering how to progress cases through our case management system (CMS) after charge, how to manage workloads effectively, and how to handle sensitive areas like pre-recorded cross-examination hearings and special measures for vulnerable witnesses. These are provisions that help protect victims during court proceedings.

“The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Knowing that my training has helped lawyers support victims of serious sexual offences more effectively is something I am extremely proud of.

“I believe strongly in looking beyond the boundaries of my formal role. In December 2025, I was honoured to receive a Director’s Commendation recognising this work, but for me, the real reward is seeing colleagues grow in confidence and knowing that, somewhere down the line, that makes a difference to victims.”
