DPP statement on the death of Barbara Mills


The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC said: "It is with much sadness that we learned of the death of Dame Barbara Mills QC, aged 70, who passed away on 28 May.

"Following a highly successful career at the Bar, Dame Barbara became the Director of the Serious Fraud Office in 1990 - a post she held for two years. In 1992, she became the first female Director of Public Prosecutions. During her six years as DPP, Dame Barbara was a strong advocate for the Crown Prosecution Service. Following her departure from the CPS, Dame Barbara held a number of senior legal appointments; she remained Chair of the Professional Oversight Board until her untimely death.

"Our thoughts are with her husband, John, her children and grandchildren."
