Drugs gang jailed over £19m heroin smuggling operation

Eight members of a drugs gang have today (14 July) been jailed for a total of more than 130 years for conspiring to flood British streets with a huge quantity of smuggled heroin.

Seven of the gang were found guilty of conspiracy to import a class A drug following an 11-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court and were sentenced at the same court today. One pleaded guilty before the trial.

The trial heard how investigators discovered 165kg of heroin with an estimated street value of £19million hidden inside metal lathes at an industrial estate in Oldbury, West Midlands.

The drugs had arrived into the UK in a container aboard a ship which had sailed from Pakistan in July 2014.

The court heard how Ameran Zeb Khan, Mohammed Ali and Sajid Hussain, all from Birmingham, masterminded the smuggling operation.

John Davies, from the CPS, said: "These men were involved in a sophisticated conspiracy to import a huge amount of heroin into the country, ignoring the human cost class A drugs can have.

"The prosecution case demonstrated how the operation involved the use of bogus companies, false documents, unregistered mobile phones and trips to Pakistan.

"By careful presentation of the evidence in court, the prosecution demonstrated the individual roles played by each of the defendants, resulting in the guilty verdicts returned by the jury."
