Decision to Charge

Once the Police have completed their investigations, they will refer the case to the Crown Prosecution Service for advice on how to proceed. We will then make a decision on whether a suspect should be charged, and what that charge should be.

Conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office charge

Gregor McGill, a senior lawyer at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "The CPS has today, 28 February, authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Simon Quinn with one count of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office between 1 November 2000 and 30 January 2011.

"Mr Quinn will appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court on 10 March 2014.

"Criminal proceedings have now commenced and this defendant has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."

Charge:

SIMON QUINN, between 1 November 2000 and 31 January 2011 conspired together with journalists and other persons unknown to commit misconduct in a public office

Contrary to section 1 Criminal Law Act 1977.
