Man jailed for sexually assaulting teenager as she made her way home
A 21-year-old man has been jailed for sexually assaulting a teenage girl as she returned home from a chip shop in Liverpool.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that Ramijah Hindes, of no fixed address, followed the 17-year-old as she made her way home in the Garston area on 17 March 2022.
He grabbed her and then subjected her to an assault that was both violent and sexually motivated. She managed to break free and he ran off.
Hindes handed himself into the police after the Liverpool Echo issued an appeal for information.
Hindes initially denied he had sexually assaulted the victim and instead said he was attempting to rob her. This was quickly disproved by a police investigation which focused very much on the offender and his mindset.
Hindes’ phone was seized and he was found to have searched for violent pornography and images of child abuse on the device.
The judge referred to this in his sentencing remarks and said the evidence from Hindes' phone revealed a worrying trend. His previous offending had been robbery.
On 14 April 2022 at Liverpool Crown Court, Hindes pleaded guilty to sexual assault. Today (12 May 2022) he was jailed for 3 years and 9 months. His phone has been confiscated and he is on the Sexual Offenders Register for an indefinite period.
The Crown Prosecution Service applied for a restraining order preventing Hindes from ever going anywhere near the victim’s address or contacting her in any way. This was granted by the court.
Chris Fontaine, a specialist lawyer with CPS Mersey Cheshire’s Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) unit, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service would like to thank everyone involved in bringing this offender to justice. We would particularly like to thank the police detective and the members of the public who assisted with the investigation.
"Most of all we would like to thank the victim whose bravery in bringing this distressing case to us has no doubt made other young women in Liverpool safer.
"Whilst attacks of this nature are thankfully the rarest form of sexual assault, they are unquestionably life changing for the victim. I can see it has affected every aspect of her life. Her personality has been changed by this incident and she is now worried about going out alone and is anxious.
“ The CPS sincerely hopes she is able to receive all the support she deserves on the road to recovery and that she is proud of her strong and determined effort to see justice done”.
