Man convicted over Notting Hill Carnival lip attack
A man who said he was the devil before biting the lip off a fellow carnival-goer has admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Jason Thompson, 42, attacked his victim during the Notting Hill carnival on 25 August 2019. On Monday, 24 February, the first day of his trial at Isleworth Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The victim had attended the carnival with her friends. At around 6pm she lost them and started to talk to another group of girls. They were taking a picture when Thompson came in front of them and shoved them. The other woman left and the victim questioned Thompson. He ran around her and told her he was the devil before head-butting her. He went to head-butt her for a second time, but instead bit her top lip.
Thompson then left with his cousin, who later came forward to identify Thompson to the police after a national media appeal. The victim had tried to search for her attacker in the crowd but when police saw her seriously injured they called an ambulance.
The victim was treated in hospital by a specialist facial surgeon. The injuries she sustained are life-changing.
Jonathan Efemini, from the CPS, said: “This violent attack by a stranger has changed this victim’s life forever.
“The victim was so taken aback by the attack that she had not fully appreciated the extent of her injuries. When she first saw herself in the mirror, she collapsed.
“Despite permanently disfiguring another’s face, Thompson drove home with his cousin, even enjoying a Nando’s on his way. Thanks to his cousin who reported him after the police launched an appeal, Thompson was arrested a few days later.
“The victim’s life has been changed forever by this attack. Thompson now has to face the consequences of this. Our thoughts remain with the victim, who we hope can take some comfort from this conviction.”
Sentencing will take place on 27 March at Isleworth Crown Court.
