Three jailed over daylight Hackney murder in front of six-year-old
Three masked men armed with swords and knives who murdered a man in front of a six-year-old girl have been jailed.
Killers Theo Momodu, 18, Taylar Isaac, 20, and David Kerrigan, 20, chased 29-year-old Joshua White along a residential road in Hackney, before stabbing him in front of a child waiting outside a grocery shop for her father.
Mr White was cornered and stabbed outside Frampton Foods after briefly stopping to help the little girl up after she had fallen over in the commotion. He managed to stumble into the shop where he collapsed just after 2pm on 26 April 2019. His attackers quickly fled the scene and made their escape in a getaway car with an unidentified driver.
Minutes later they confronted a man walking nearby with his girlfriend and nine-month-old baby in a pram. They stabbed him up to five times. He managed to get away and survived.
Mr White suffered four stab wounds and died in hospital on the same day.
Momodu, Isaac and Kerrigan were convicted of murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a trial at the Old Bailey. Momodu had already pleaded guilty to murder at a previous hearing. Co-defendant Harley McGivern, 20, was convicted of perverting the course of justice in the same trial.
Today (Thursday, 22 April) at the Old Bailey Momodu was sentenced to 18 years, Isaac was sentenced to 25 years and Kerrigan was also sentenced to 25 years in custody. McGivern will be sentenced at a later date.
Police were alerted to the stabbings and told about the Ford that the attackers were seen to be driving around in. They spotted the car and a vehicle pursuit began before the car crashed into some stationary vehicles and a wall. Momodu was caught by police nearby. The others, who made their way to McGivern’s home to dispose of incriminating evidence, were arrested later during the course of the investigation.
A search of Momodu’s mobile phone found text messages telling him and the other “ygs” to carry out violent acts or face being “de-recruited”. The ultimatum message read: “When I was your age I had 10 names on my blade you lot ain’t hurt a single soul.”
Samantha Yelland, from the CPS, said: “This was a brazen and shocking attack on a residential street in front of a six-year-old child in broad daylight. These men were set on serious violence. They did not care who saw. But Joshua White’s concern for the young child led to him being cornered by his killers.
“Theo Momodu, Taylar Isaac and David Kerrigan thought they could avoid being caught by wearing hoods and face masks along with latex gloves, but using CCTV evidence to piece together events before and after the murder and stabbing, the prosecution was able to show that it was these three men who were responsible.
“Although nothing can bring Joshua White back, I hope this conviction goes some way in providing comfort to his family and friends. Our thoughts are with them at this time.”
