Man jailed for controlling and coercive behaviour and beating pregnant girlfriend

A man who repeatedly beat his pregnant partner has been jailed for three years for displaying controlling and coercive behaviour.

Reece Penkert, 20, controlled his partner by stopping her from going anywhere without him, taking away her phone or looking through her messages and ordering her to delete her social networking accounts so that she had little contact with her family and friends.

Penkert also stopped the victim from wearing t-shirts and skirts and constantly accused her of cheating on him over the course of the two-year relationship, in which he also physically attacked her.

The relationship started off well but within three months Penkert had become controlling and violent. In one attack Penkert punched his victim and fractured his own hand in the process.

When the victim discovered she was pregnant she feared what Penkert's reaction would be. He continued with the same behaviour. When the victim was in labour he was obstructive towards health professionals and would not initially allow male doctors to examine her.

Today [Friday, 8 March] at Harrow Crown Court Penkert was sentenced to three years in prison for his crimes against his ex-partner. A restraining order stopping him from contacting her was also made. Penkert was found guilty of one count of controlling and coercive behaviour and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm following a 15-day trial at Harrow Crown Court that began in January.

Emma Harris, from the CPS, said: "Reece Penkert demonstrated extremely controlling behaviour, which included assaulting his partner and trying to isolate her from her friends and family.

"Having suffered months of isolation and emotional and physical abuse, the victim showed immense bravery by giving evidence during the trial, and I would like to thank her for the courage she has shown.

"I hope today’s sentence provides some comfort to the victim and shows the CPS's commitment to prosecuting cases of domestic abuse."
