Man jailed for 11 years after raping young girls

|News, Sexual offences

A man who raped a 12-year-old girl at knife-point as part of a pattern of sexual abuse against three girls, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Joel Ampadu, 19, was found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting three separate victims involving nine separate offences, after a trial at Blackfriars Crown Court in June.

He was sentenced on Friday 17 August 2018 to 11 years in prison and a further three years on licence.

His first victim was 13-years-old when Ampadu, also 13 at the time, took her to a building and forced her to engage in sexual activity with him. He also filmed the act on his phone and used it to try and blackmail his victim into further encounters.

Another victim was 12-years old in 2015 when he took her to a block of flats and made her have sex with him. He threatened her with harm on three or four occasions if she did not go with him again, and once forced her to engage in sexual activity at knifepoint.

The third victim was 15 when Ampadu, 17 at the time, started to threaten her and forced her to have sex at an address in Greenwich. He filmed it and shared it with another person.

During the trial, the three girls gave evidence against Ampadu from behind screens.

Anja Hohmeyer, of the CPS Rape and Serious Sexual Offences unit for CPS London North, said: "Joel Ampadu used threats of violence and blackmail to force girls to engage in sexual activity with him.

"None of them consented to these acts but were fearful of him and how he had threatened to expose them.

"His victims bravely gave evidence against him during his trial, with the prosecution being able to support them with ensuring they could give evidence without him seeing them, and we hope these verdicts provide a sense of justice for the offences against them."
