Life sentence for Leicester domestic murder

A Leicester man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife.

Baldeep Singh had estranged from his wife Amandeep Kaur. He had tried to exert control over her and had made unjustified allegations that she had been unfaithful to him.

In the early hours of 3 February 2017, while their two children were still in the house, Singh attacked Ms Kaur and killed her. When she was dead, he took the children to school, before withdrawing money, hiring a vehicle and attending his local Gurudhwara (Sikh Temple) for. He later returned the vehicle to the hire company without using it and admitted his crime to the police.

Singh pleaded guilty to murder, and was today (2 October 2017) sentenced to life with a minimum term of 19 years.

Fiona Brooks from the CPS said: "Amandeep Kaur had done nothing wrong, and was greatly affected by the deterioration of the marriage. Singh's behaviour towards her had degenerated into violence and he confessed to killing her because of her supposed infidelity. The CPS put evidence to the court that his escalating violence was an attempt at controlling her. Ms Kaur would not submit to his demands, so he killed her.

"The defendant admitted to killing Ms Kaur but maintained he had used an ordinary kitchen knife to carry out the attack. The evidence of Ms Kaur's injuries was clear that this was not the case, so the CPS requested a hearing to determine the facts of Ms Kaur's killing. This was important to ensure the judge could sentence Singh for the full extent of his crime.

"The CPS showed the court that Singh had brought a takua, a ceremonial axe with a 'half-moon' blade, into the house. The judge found that this was the murder weapon and that his actions in killing her were premeditated.

"I would like to offer Ms Kaur's family every sympathy, in particular her two children. The have had to come to terms with not only the loss of a much-loved mother and sister, but also the knowledge that she was taken from them by someone close to them."

  • Baldeep Singh admitted killing Ms Kaur and pleaded guilty to murder at Leicester Crown Court in April 2017.
  • Because he did not accept the nature of the murder weapon, the facts were determined at a trial of Issue. This is also known as a Newton hearing.
