Woman sentenced for injuring her own baby
A woman has been sentenced to fifteen months’ imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court for inflicting grievous bodily harm on her six-month-old son.
The woman phoned the emergency services back in 2016, stating that the baby had stopped breathing and had “got floppy”.
She initially stated that the baby had been crying the night before and could not explain any injury, but subsequent medical examinations revealed injuries that were consistent with the baby being shaken.
Kelly Huggins of the CPS said “The defendant originally denied any responsibility for the injuries discovered, but through the detailed medical reports which were obtained by the CPS we were able to demonstrate the cause of injury.
“Faced with the strength of expert evidence the defendant eventually accepted her guilt.”
At the sentence hearing the fifteen-month custodial sentence imposed by the judge was suspended for a period of one year.
